The office of the priesthood requires a standard of conduct that is not merely professional, but profoundly moral. In the Orthodox tradition, the priesthood is not a career choice, a fallback option, or a platform for personal brand-building; it is a terrifying spiritual stewardship that demands absolute integrity, an unyielding commitment to truth, and a disciplined guard over one’s speech. When an incoming seminarian publicly champions the strict discipline of an institution, only to flagrantly violate those exact principles in the digital public square, it raises urgent questions of character, fitness, and canonical compliance.

This open letter concerns the public conduct, patterned behavioral history, and pastoral suitability of incoming seminarian .

I. The Public Praise of Discipline

On June 10, 2026, Mr. Davis published an essay titled “Off to Priest School,” praising his upcoming transition into seminary formation. In his public writing and surrounding commentary, he has frequently framed institutional boundaries—specifically the stringent, necessary rules regarding social media usage and digital detachment for candidates—as a vital antidote to the corrosive, attention-hijacking nature of modern digital discourse.

Yet, a man’s true metrics are found not in the rules he praises, but in the behavior he exhibits when he believes no one of consequence is watching.

II. The Reality of Digital Defamation

We witnessed this breakdown firsthand when Mr. Davis abandoned the very standard he claimed to revere. In a deliberate and targeted campaign of digital defamation, he published verifiably false and conspiratorial claims against private individuals, writing publicly on Substack:

“Fr. Emmanuel is a multimillionaire hedge-fund manager with his own PR team. They bombard the UOJ (my employer) and other outlets with emails, begging us to interview him. This whole AI-generated rant is completely hypocritical and bizarre.”

When directly confronted on his timeline and asked to produce the receipts, the emails proving that my office or a purported PR team had “bombarded” his employer, Mr. Davis chose the path of cowed evasion rather than journalistic or Christian honesty. Rather than retracting his flat-out fabrications, he retreated into defensive, dismissive posturing, writing:

“Immediately threatening to sue me is so on-brand.”

This was not an academic disagreement; it was a deliberate act of public slander designed to incite animus online. It represents the exact brand of toxic, algorithmically driven engagement that St. Tikhon’s rightly seeks to purge from its formation process.

III. A History of Patterned Evasion and Institutional Fractures

This behavior is not an isolated incident or a temporary lapse in judgment; it represents a documented history of volatile online conduct and institutional fractures that have long drawn public scrutiny.

Before his transition to Eastern Orthodoxy in 2024, Mr. Davis was a well-credentialed and prominent figure within traditionalist Catholic media, serving as an author and editor for outlets including Crisis Magazine, the Catholic Herald, and Sophia Institute Press. However, his sudden departure from the Roman Catholic Church was met with public bewilderment and critical reflection from within his former community.

Prominent traditionalist Catholic commentary noted that his exit mirrored an ideological instability, with observers highlighting a patterned danger in his approach to faith, namely, the tendency to “define oneself by what one opposes” and “forging a love of A from a hatred of not-A”. Rather than reflecting true spiritual groundedness, his public persona was criticized for being driven by a personal and ideological horizon that ultimately “withered” and broke under pressure.

Furthermore, his history of escalating online conflict is evidenced by his recent public feuds within the traditionalist intellectual space. Mr. Davis has engaged in high-profile digital controversies, including an adversarial public exchange involving the philosopher Sebastian Morello. In these disputes, Mr. Davis routinely utilizes public platforms to generate controversy and attack the intellectual or personal integrity of others, prompting external critics to publicly express concerns regarding his erratic behavior.

Faced with criticism over his aggressive digital methods across multiple platforms, previous targets of his campaigns have publicly observed that Mr. Davis’s “near-pathological obsession” and vitriolic focus “betrays in him serious psychological instability, for which I hope he receives help before long.”

When caught spreading fabrications, his immediate instinct is to dodge accountability, cry victimization, and shift the narrative to mock his targets. Such a pattern of behavior is completely antithetical to the temperament of a pastor. A man who uses his keyboard as a weapon of ego-driven malice and ideological “island hopping” does not possess the psychological or spiritual sobriety required to shepherd human souls.

IV. The Violation of St. Tikhon’s Own Institutional Standards

The contradiction here is absolute, and it directly violates the explicit standards published by St. Tikhon’s Seminary. On your institution’s official portal, the Seminary declares that its primary mission is to provide the necessary “moral foundations for Orthodox men to become, as God so wills, good shepherds of His Holy Orthodox Church.” Furthermore, your published prerequisites for entering priestly formation mandate that a candidate possess a demonstrated “general maturity of character” and a clear “commitment to... practical Christian living.”

Mr. Davis is attempting to walk two entirely irreconcilable paths:

1. Presenting himself to your admissions board as a pious candidate possessing the “general maturity of character” and “moral foundations” required of a future shepherd.

2. Operating on digital timelines as a reckless, ego-driven actor who utilizes verifiably false statements to publicly defame others, the exact antithesis of “practical Christian living”.

When an incoming student uses his public platform to bear false witness and then hides behind defensive deflection when asked for accountability, he is not demonstrating the profile of a “good shepherd.” He is demonstrating a profound, disqualifying lack of basic character maturity. Under both your standard institutional policies and broader canonical frameworks regarding the reputation of the faithful, public defamation is a grave matter. It disqualifies an individual from claiming the mantle of spiritual leadership until genuine repentance, public retraction, and full restitution are made.

V. The Patristic and Canonical Metric of Suitability

The Orthodox Church does not view suitability for the priesthood through the lens of modern secular resume-building. It views it through the lens of canonical purity. St. Basil the Great was unyielding on the discipline of speech and the absolute necessity of truthfulness in those who seek to serve the altar. As St. Basil explicitly warned in The Long Rules:

“The mouth that slanders kills the soul.”

In the canonical tradition of the Church, a candidate’s public character must be entirely above reproach, emphasizing that sins of malice and deliberate falsehood reflect a soul unfit for pastoral care. Furthermore, the foundational canonical boundaries of the Church are explicit:

• Apostolic Canon 55 dictates severe spiritual penalties for those who insult or slander others, reflecting the gravity with which the ancient Church guarded the reputation of the faithful.

• The patristic consensus across the Philocalia warns that the tongue of a slanderer poisons the peace of the community, the exact antithesis of the priest’s role as a source of healing, truth, and reconciliation.

When Mr. Davis engages in the deliberate creation and propagation of conspiratorial falsehoods, he is not merely violating a modern “social media policy.” He is demonstrating a profound misalignment with the patristic spirit and violating the foundational canonical standards that govern suitability for holy orders.

VI. A Call to the Standard

An institution is only as strong as the standards it enforces. If an incoming seminarian can openly violate the spirit and the letter of your digital conduct policies—and the very canons of the Church—before even setting foot on campus, the integrity of the formation process itself is compromised.

I bring this matter to the attention of the Seminary administration not out of personal grievance, but out of a fundamental respect for the truth and the dignity of the office Mr. Davis seeks to hold. The public square requires accountability, and the Church requires shepherds whose words are anchored in reality, not malice.

I look forward to your response regarding how the Seminary intends to address this clear breach of institutional, moral, and canonical standards.

Where is Aidan?

His digital footprints appear to have been scrubbed from the internet.

Search for him now, and what remains is not a public life, but an absence: deleted pages, unavailable posts, missing accounts, and a name preserved most clearly in court filings.

For years, Fr. Josiah Trenham has presented himself to the public as a voice of certainty: a priest, teacher, and online authority speaking with unusual confidence about tradition, obedience, masculinity, family order, and the duties of Christian life.

His message has found a particularly eager audience among young men disoriented by the modern world. Orthodoxy truly heals. But when healing is severed from the Cross, something else can begin to speak in its name.

Sometimes, the first sign is how a man answers the wounded.

The question was not abstract. It concerned Orthodox Christians persecuted for their faith, people described as “hurting,” betrayed by their own priest or spiritual father.

Fr. Josiah’s answer came quickly:

“Stop your whining. Rejoice and be glad for God’s sake! When men insult you and persecute you… dance! Go outside and dance!”

The command to rejoice under persecution is Christian. But the first words matter.

“Stop your whining.”

They reveal an instinct: not first to descend in love, not first to receive the wound with trembling, not first to pour in oil and wine, but to rebuke pain into silence.

At the time, perhaps, it sounded like severity.

In retrospect, it sounds like a key.

And the key turns toward one question:

When a Son’s Cry Became Exhibit #20

Then the public image cracked.

In October 2020, a young man in his late twenties released a raw video on instagram alleging severe household trauma and sexual abuse endured as a boy. The post did not emerge from a hostile secular critic, a rival cleric, or an ideological enemy. It came from within the household itself.

That fact changes everything.

In the Orthodox understanding of fatherhood, such anguish is not a public-relations problem to be managed. It is a sacred burden. A father is called to shelter the wounded, to bear shame, and to place the suffering child above reputation, income, platform, or institutional standing.

Yet the record suggests something very different happened.

Fr. Josiah Trenham, together with Patristic Nectar Publications, Inc. and his parish corporation, became plaintiffs in a sweeping federal lawsuit against the independent publisher who had written about the son’s public social media post.

The case, filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, sought substantial damages and court-ordered removal of the publishers allegedly defamatory article.

The contrast is stark. A priest who publicly commands others to endure mistreatment without complaint did not merely suffer the accusation in silence. He turned to the federal court system.

The complaint sought damages in extraordinary terms:

“Plaintiffs pray for judgment against Defendants… For general, special, and consequential damages against Defendants in the sum of $800,000… For punitive and exemplary damages under California Civil Code section 3294… [and] a Mandamus Order to remove the herein-alleged defamatory and privacy-invading posts on Defendants’ website.”

This is the cardinal part of the story: A son’s confession became a public legal exhibit.

A family wound became a federal docket. And the question that began as a matter of anguish was transformed into a litigation strategy: removal, damages, injunction, silence.

Look more closely at the evidence attached to the federal docket, and the central problem sharpens.

The son’s original post was raw, emotional, and deeply disturbing. By contrast, the later statement submitted to the bishop appears formal, controlled, and legally useful.

That was the legal use of Exhibit #20: not merely denial, but utility. It gave the plaintiffs a document they could use to argue falsity, seek removal, and recast a son’s public suffering as defamatory material.

Even the plaintiffs’ own default-judgment motion could not avoid the central fact. It described the suppressed article as reposting video clips and a photo of Aidan, which the article labeled his “cry for help.”

That phrase should haunt the docket.

A cry for help does not first summon affidavits. It summons protection.

And beneath the legal silence lies a more serious one.

If the conduct described in the public record involved criminal abuse, then the question is not merely whether the family, the parish, or the bishop handled it internally. The question is whether civil authorities were ever notified.

That silence is harder to understand in light of the Antiochian Archdiocese’s own safeguarding framework. Its policy states that suspected abuse must be reported whether it occurred “on church premises or elsewhere,” and whether the suspected abuser was a “family member” or “anyone else.” It also emphasizes, in bold, that “informing one’s supervisors and/or senior pastor is not the same as reporting reasonable suspicion of abuse to legal authorities.”

Then comes the sentence that matters most:

“The first report must be made to law enforcement.”

So the question remains:

Was there a police report?

If so, where is it?

If not, why not?

John Dean’s Watergate warning has become a proverb of institutional scandal: “It’s not the crime; it’s the cover-up.”

That sentence does not decide what happened in the Trenham household. But it names the question the record keeps raising. When a son’s cry for help becomes a notarized exhibit, and the response moves through bishops, affidavits, demands, damages, and removal, the issue is no longer only the original wound.

It is what was done afterward.

The deeper issue is what the statement did, and did not, retract, especially when compared with the plaintiffs’ own motion for default judgment.

That pleading claimed that, four days after the article and videos were posted, Aidan “repudiated everything the post said” and “attested that none of what the post said was true,” citing Exhibit #20.

But that characterization is overbroad on its face.

The letter does contain a recantation of implications against Fr. Josiah. Aidan wrote that he was “writing this letter to refute all of the accusations made in this video,” denied that his father was guilty of “child abuse or any sexual misconduct,” and later stated that he “completely recant[ed] and disavow[ed] anything” that could be construed as accusing Fr. Josiah of physical abuse or sexual molestation.

But that is not the same thing as establishing that “none of what the post said was true.”

That distinction is central. An after-the-fact denial of wrongdoing by Fr. Josiah is not the same as a statement that the core disclosure was false in every respect. Yet the default-judgment motion treated it as though it erased the entire post and all of the claims it made.

At minimum, that discrepancy raises serious questions about candor and the legal use of a vulnerable son’s words.

The letter itself is revealing in another way: it says Fr. Josiah “never had any idea that I was molested as a child.” That sentence does not deny that Aidan was violated as a child (the verb is notably dialed down from that used in the video). It says his father did not know.

The legal value of the letter, then, lies less in resolving the underlying crime and related trauma than in protecting the father from personal culpability.

It denies Intrafamilial sexual abuse or incest while leaving the original underlying claims present in the video itself: rape, beating, religious extremism, family alienation, excommunication, and the assertion that a niece was disowned, largely untouched.

The notarization also raises serious questions. In ordinary civil life, notarized statements are associated with legal, financial, or official acts. Here, a family and spiritual crisis was routed through a form designed to create legal reliability.

Although presented as a letter to the bishop, the statement functioned in the docket as something closer to a surrogate affidavit: a document used to establish the alleged falsity of the public abuse claims against Fr. Josiah.

Its language, timing, notarization, and legal utility raise obvious questions about how it was prepared, who assisted in its drafting, and whether Aidan had independent advice before signing it.

The dating heightens the concern further. The letter bears the same date as its notarization. It opens in the register of ecclesial blessing, asks to be received by a bishop, and repeatedly adopts the language of confession: “I confess that I took drugs,” “I admit,” “I am grievously sorry.” In ordinary litigation, such phrases may read as admissions. In the Orthodox Church, they belong to the language of confession, and the healing of the soul. Yet on that same date, this bishop-facing, penitential letter appears ready for legal authentication — ecclesial language passing almost immediately into juridical use.

That makes its public deployment extraordinary. If this letter was solicited, received, or treated as confession, then its conversion into a notarized exhibit in federal litigation would raise grave ecclesial and canonical questions. Even if one stops short of calling it a formal sacramental confession, the scandal remains: Exhibit #20 blurs a line that should never be blurred, the line between the healing life of the Church and legal action taken to protect a revenue stream.

The seal of confession is not a public-relations device. It is not a litigation asset. It is not material to be notarized, quoted, and deployed in defense of a cleric’s reputation.

What should have belonged to the economy of healing was placed into the economy of reputation management. What should have been received, if at all, with fear of God, trembling, and spiritual discretion, was converted into evidence.

The statement also attempts to discredit the original social media post by referencing drugs and alcohol. But intoxication, even if present, does not end the inquiry. It does not explain why the later document appears so polished, so carefully framed, so juridically useful, and so perfectly suited to the plaintiffs’ defamation claim.

Against that attempt to dismiss the original post through intoxication, the words of St. John Climacus land with particular force:

“Someone who is elated with wine speaks the truth on all subjects, even without meaning to. In the same way, anyone who is inebriated with the spirit of penitence will never be able to tell lies.”

A statement signed under the shadow of family, institutional, or litigation pressure cannot be treated as a simple, transparent resolution of the original allegation. At minimum, it raises the possibility that a vulnerable son’s words were converted into a defensive document serving the needs of a public ministry and its legal strategy.

This was not healing. It was the juridical capture of a soul’s cry.

Four Days Later: The Retraction That Did Not Retract

The public messaging becomes more disturbing when placed against the timeline.

On September 11, 2020, in a podcast titled Living with Horrible Parents, Fr. Josiah Trenham addressed the sorrow of those raised by abusive parents. Yet the counsel quickly turned toward concealment, restraint, and silence. Victims were urged to:

“…cover over their parents’ sins with a blanket of love”

and to:

“…try not to meditate upon and repeat the sins of your parents... we should try to forget the mistakes and the sins of our parents.”

He also warned against “constantly repeating” parental sins, even telling wounded children to remember that “your mom changed your diapers.”

On its own, the message is already unsettling: a priest reaching for the Old Testament story of Noah’s sons to teach children how to cover parental sins.

But in hindsight, the timing makes it impossible to read innocently.

Less than one month later, on October 8, 2020, an independent publisher wrote about Aidan Trenham’s public social media post outlining severe abuse, trauma, and sexual violation.

Four days after that, on October 12, 2020, a notarized statement appeared.

A public teaching urged wounded children to cover over their parents’ sins. A son’s public account then surfaced. Within four days, a formal, notarized statement appeared. Later, that statement became part of a federal lawsuit seeking damages and removal of the material from public view.

This does not prove that the September podcast was consciously preemptive. But it does make the broadcast read very differently. What first appears as general pastoral advice begins to look, in light of subsequent events, like a theological framework for suppressing family revelation: do not repeat the grievance, do not expose the household, cover the father’s sins.

When that framing did not end the matter, the response shifted into civil litigation. Specialized litigators, backed by the Thomas More Society, pursued a federal lawsuit that sought damages and removal of the article referencing the already public social media post.

Sources familiar with the household dynamics have described an environment in which vulnerable family members allegedly faced intense relational pressure, fear of permanent exclusion, and swift retaliation when paternal or religious authority was challenged. If accurate, that context would make any subsequent retraction far less straightforward than the litigation record suggests.

In Orthodox terms, this is precisely where discernment is required. Not every silence is peace. Not every recantation is repentance. Not every outward restoration of order is healing. There is a false peace that preserves the appearance of obedience while leaving the wounded soul unhealed. There is a counterfeit covering of shame that protects reputation rather than bearing another’s pain.

A son challenging a dominant, high-profile religious figure father does not merely risk emotional pain. The cost can be familial, social, spiritual, financial, and reputational. Under that kind of pressure, a wounded son may retreat, recant, or agree to restore the family image simply to make the immediate suffering stop.

“Without Anger”: When Discipline Becomes Control

“But my father never, not once beat me or disciplined me in anger.”

That sentence is meant to reassure. But it does not resolve the question. It deepens it.

A beating administered “without anger” is not less troubling than one delivered in rage. Calmness does not make a beating righteous, measured, or harmless. If anything, severe punishment carried out without visible anger suggests something more deliberate: not an impulsive loss of control, but a settled regime of authority.

That distinction is important because Fr. Josiah Trenham has not been silent on physical discipline. In the same September 2020 broadcast, Living with Horrible Parents, released during the very window in which his household crisis was moving toward public exposure, he told his audience:

“If your parents were too hard on you physically, that doesn’t mean that when you raise your children that you shouldn’t properly and peacefully physically discipline them when that’s necessary.”

That statement is extraordinary. He is speaking directly to people whose parents were “too hard” on them physically, people who suffered under harsh discipline, and yet he tells them not to reject physical punishment when they become parents. In effect, the abused child is instructed not to break the cycle, but to preserve it under the sanitized language of “properly and peacefully” administered discipline.

That phrase is doing enormous work. It renames force as order, punishment as peace, and control as love. But placed beside Aidan’s own words — “beat me” — the euphemism becomes difficult to hear innocently.

The question is not whether every Christian parent who has ever used corporal punishment is guilty of abuse. The question is narrower, and far more serious: what happens when a public religious teacher normalizes physical discipline, tells children to cover parental sin, and then relies on a notarized statement in which his own son insists that any beating or discipline was not done “in anger”?

At that point, “without anger” begins to look less like exoneration than method. It is not a denial that force was used. It is a claim about the spirit in which force was administered. Calmness does not absolve the force; it reveals the system behind it.

That system depends on a profound theological bait-and-switch. The New Testament does not command fathers to physically chastise their children into holiness. Christ reveals authority through self-sacrificial love, patience, gentleness, repentance, and the bearing of shame for the sake of the wounded.

Yet harsh household discipline is often defended by retreating into isolated Old Testament proof-texts, especially the language of the “rod” in Proverbs, as though the Gospel of the Crucified One were somehow insufficiently severe.

That is not patristic fatherhood. It is domination baptized in Old Testament language.

The theological inversion is severe. The father who should step into the breach for the abused child instead asks the child to cover the father’s nakedness. The son becomes the one made to absorb sin, soften the wound, and protect the public image of the household.

This is where the Orthodox idea of spiritual fatherhood becomes unavoidable.

Nor is asceticism a weapon to be imposed on the weak. True ascesis (ἄσκησις) is voluntary, inward, and in the shape of The Cross: the free offering of the heart to God for the acquisition of mercy. When physical chastisement is used to compel spiritual performance, the healing grace of Christ is distorted into an authoritarian regime of control.

That point will matter later.

For now, the pattern is already visible: pain is reframed as rebellion, disclosure as dishonor, beating as order, and silence as love.

This departure becomes even more glaring when measured against the very Church Fathers the subject claims to revere. St. John Chrysostom does not present the Christian home as a place of domination, fear, and physical subjugation. He envisions it as a little church, formed through patience, affection, instruction, and the gradual cultivation of virtue.

To claim the mantle of the Fathers while relying on harsh physical dominance reveals a profound inversion. The wound is translated into the language of discipline, retraction, and control.

And the phrase meant to soften the matter — “not in anger” — is the very phrase that reveals how cold the beating had become.

Exhibit 19: The Article That Vanished

Consider the fate of Exhibit 19: an independent article titled “Raped and Beaten: Growing Up a Trenham by Aidan Trenham.”

That article no longer exists in ordinary public view. It was removed after a default judgment in federal court, entered not after a full trial on the merits, but after the independent publisher couldn’t afford to mount a legal defense against a high-powered legal team backed by the Thomas More Society.

A default judgment can produce silence. It can produce removal. It can produce the appearance of vindication. But it does not produce the discovery of truth.

SanFilippo presented the publication not as gossip or ideological sport, but as a grave and painful act of witness. Whether one trusts his judgment or not, the article contained Aidan’s already public testimony, and that testimony disappeared through legal force.

To avoid misunderstanding, this commentary is not an endorsement of SanFilippo’s personal life, views, lifestyle, or ideological advocacy, which the publisher of this text does not share or defend. The issue here is more restricted: the legal mechanics used to erase a publication containing a son’s public testimony.

The legal record and the public-relations campaign should also be distinguished carefully. The demand letter and complaint catalogued a broad range of older Orthodoxy in Dialogue publications, many of which portrayed Fr. Josiah as misogynistic, abusive, or unfit for ministry. But the sharper ideological framing came after the judgment, when the Thomas More Society press release publicly branded SanFilippo as a “gay activist publisher” and an “internet troll masquerading as media.”

That framing matters because it shifts the reader’s attention away from the son’s testimony and toward the publisher’s identity.

Exhibit 19 is important then, not because SanFilippo is beyond criticism, but because the article’s disappearance became part of the larger pattern: a son speaks, a retraction appears, a lawsuit follows, and the public record is narrowed until the wound itself becomes difficult to see.

Fr. Josiah Trenham appears to have issued no direct, public statement addressing the allegations within his own household. The public record instead shows the resources of Fr. Josiah, Patristic Nectar Publications, Inc., and his parish corporation directed toward civil litigation seeking damages and removal of the published material.

That is the contrast at the heart of the case.

The public record reveals no evidence that Fr. Josiah pursued the young man’s abusers, much lesss with the same intensity he deployed in Father Josiah Trenham, et al. v. Peter J. Sanfilippo, et al.

The Default Judgment That Became a Brand Shield

The lawsuit did not end merely with a monetary award. It ended with an order restricting further publication, a court-enforced shield around a public religious figure’s reputation.

The judgment stated:

“Defendant Peter J. Sanfilippo is ORDERED to refrain from publishing details or purported details of Plaintiff Father Josiah Trenham...”

The legal effect was plain: the disputed material disappeared, the public record narrowed, and a judicial barrier now stood between the public and further publication of “details or purported details” concerning him.

This was not merely a private father responding to public accusation. It was a media enterprise, joined to a parish corporation, using federal litigation against a fellow Orthodox Christian publisher who had written about a son’s public cry for help.

The very name of the enterprise, Patristic Nectar Publications, Inc., sharpens the irony. The filings describe it as a ministry dedicated to “nourishing the spiritually thirsty with the sweet teachings of the Holy Fathers.” Yet here, the institution bearing that name was used not to pour out spiritual sweetness, but to unsheathe the sword of secular litigation.

Because the parish corporation also joined the lawsuit, the matter cannot be treated as a purely private dispute between a priest and a publisher. In Orthodox ecclesiology, a parish exists under episcopal oversight, under the omophorion (ὠμοφόριον) of the bishop, and within the order of the Church. Its presence in the caption therefore raises unavoidable questions about episcopal knowledge, blessing, or at minimum acquiescence.

Those questions become more serious because SanFilippo’s publications did not concern only Fr. Josiah. They also criticized Metropolitan Joseph, the hierarch under whose authority Fr. Josiah served. If the same bishop was positioned to receive a son’s penitential letter, assess the allegations, and oversee a parish corporation participating in litigation against the publisher, then the conflict is grave. The bishop is called to be guardian of truth and physician of souls, not a manager of reputation. If the archpriest himself had reason to fear exposure, his discernment would have almost certainly been compromised.

The complaint did not merely allege abstract reputational harm. It placed the injury in strikingly personal and commercial terms:

“Defendants’ publication of such false and defamatory statements did, in fact, directly and proximately result in the following: (i) harm to PLAINTIFFS’ business, trade, profession, occupation, and ministries; (ii) shame, mortification and hurt feelings, resulting in severe emotional distress; and (iii) other harm to FATHER JOSIAH’s reputation…”

That language is not incidental. Across the complaint, the alleged injury repeatedly appears in the language of hurt feelings, wounded reputation, embarrassment, emotional distress, business harm, professional standing, and future economic advantage. The pleading even treats Patristic Nectar Publications and St. Andrew Church in commercial terms, invoking their “trade,” “profession,” “business,” “services,” and “products.”

The complaint elsewhere went further, alleging that the defendants intended to place Fr. Josiah “in reasonable fear for his safety.” But the pleaded facts do not carry the weight of that phrase. The same section characterizes the alleged conduct as “though not threatening violence,” and points instead to electronic publication, hyperlinks, personal identifying information, and allegedly harassing messages. The rhetoric of physical danger is invoked, but the pleading does not identify a concrete threat, assault, police report, restraining order, or act of physical intimidation.

The fear claim therefore reads less like documented danger than litigation escalation.

Despite official claims that Orthodoxy in Dialogue and its founder, Peter J. SanFilippo, had been defaming the plaintiffs “since 2018,” the plaintiffs took no legal action until the family crisis broke. The public narrative of “vindication” rests on procedural default, not discovery, cross-examination, evidentiary testing, or trial. That posture can produce judgment, damages, and removal. It does not establish objective historical proof that the underlying allegations were false.

The damages demands were severe. The First Amended Complaint sought $800,000 in general, special, and consequential damages, plus punitive and exemplary damages. The later default-judgment motion sought $300,000 in damages and removal of the challenged posts.

The final judgment entered $300,000 against SanFilippo.

Yet the monetary claims appear strikingly unmoored from any public, itemized accounting of actual loss. The available pleadings do not present a revenue loss report, or detailed accounting that would allow readers to evaluate whether the damages reflected verifiable economic harm rather than litigation pressure.

The alleged injury was framed not primarily as family tragedy, but as injury to an economic ecosystem:

There is the cold logic of the case. A son’s outcry became market damage. Household trauma became reputational exposure. A child’s wound was translated into the language of customers, donors, patrons, parishioners, and future economic benefit.

Further, the post-judgement press release deserves scrutiny precisely because of what it emphasized, and what it omitted. It emphasized SanFilippo’s identity and ideology, though those labels did not answer the factual question raised by Aidan’s testimony. It celebrated a “victory,” while failing to foreground that the outcome was a procedural default rather than a contested trial on the merits. Most importantly, it erased the son. Aidan Trenham, the household allegations, and the disturbing videos at the heart of the controversy disappeared entirely from the public-relations narrative.

Even the timing of the June 29, 2022 press release carries a bitter symbolism. It appeared on the Feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the name day of Peter SanFilippo. For an Orthodox priest, that date is impossible to miss. A default judgement, rebranded as a secular legal victory over a fellow Orthodox Christian was publicly celebrated on a sacred day associated with his patronal name, while the wounded son remained unseen.

Also, the brand question cannot be separated from that legal strategy.

Beyond the courtroom, the financial trajectory of Patristic Nectar Publications exposes a operational contradiction. While Orthodox critics were being forced offline through federal litigation, the principal plaintiff operated a growing digital para-church entity: Orthodox Christian Ministries, Inc., doing business as Patristic Nectar Publications.

Public Form 990 filings show a significant rise in program service revenue:

FY 2013 Baseline: $13,887 in program revenue.

FY 2022: $243,547.

FY 2024: $334,432.

Those figures reveal the scale of the platform whose reputation was being protected.

While Patristic Nectar’s filings allow some public view into its expanding digital economy, the physical parish of St. Andrew Church, including the compensation structure for its senior pastor, remains largely opaque because churches are generally sheltered from the disclosure requirements that apply to other nonprofit entities.

The complaint’s own vocabulary had already exposed the ambiguity: parishioners beside customers, ministry beside business, spiritual authority beside products and future economic benefits.

Within the life of the Church, there is an old and bitter distinction between “those who live for the Church and those who live from the Church.”

When the altar becomes inseparable from a media platform, criticism is no longer merely criticism. It becomes a threat to the brand. And when a son’s testimony threatens that brand, the temptation is not repentance, but management: legal management, reputational management, financial management, and narrative management.

History later delivered a severe verdict on the high places of that archdiocese. Mere months after the default judgment, Metropolitan Joseph’s public authority collapsed amid scandal. While that timing does not prove the allegations concerning Aidan, it deepens the institutional tragedy: the publisher who carried the son’s testimony had also warned of rot at the top, only to be legally crushed just before that same hierarchy fractured under its own weight.

The sequence is damning. A son’s testimony was narrowed and buried; a publisher was silenced; a compromised hierarch fell; and yet, the media brand that drove the lawsuit continued to present itself as a guardian of tradition, purity, and truth.

When an institution uses law to protect its image rather than truth to heal its wounds, it mistakes juridical victory for spiritual vindication. The docket may close. The judgment may stand. The brand may endure for now. But the Spirit does not breathe through managed silence.

The Wounds Behind the Brand

“You are right about Father Josiah. I have had very horrible experiences in my years attending the church which caused me to leave… He is very dangerous for many people… His confessions almost killed me…”

The fragility of the public brand is further exposed by those who have lived within its orbit.

Private accounts from individuals connected to the parish over many years describe a rigid, high-demand environment marked by intense expectations of obedience, loyalty, spiritual performance, and personal compliance. Rather than a sanctuary of healing, they describe an atmosphere in which vulnerable parishioners could be left spiritually and emotionally devastated.

Former associates and confidants describe a domestic reality that appears to mirror the institutional one: a high-control system in which vulnerable family members allegedly faced psychological pressure, fear of permanent estrangement, and the burden of preserving a pristine public facade.

Aidan Trenham’s story does not appear in isolation. It emerges from a wider ecology of control, reputation, silence, and spiritualized compliance.

The public platform spoke constantly of courage, obedience, honor, masculinity, and spiritual discipline. But those closest to its orbit describe something darker: not the healing authority of a true spiritual father, but the suffocating pressure of a system organized around control.

Here the deepest inversion comes into view. In Orthodoxy, the father is called to take up The Cross first: to descend first, to bear sin first, to protect first, and to repent first. He does not preserve his name by placing the burden of shame upon the child. He spends himself so the wounded child may be gathered, clothed, and healed.

Borrowed Antiquity, Evangelical Origins, and the Architecture of Control

The concern is not antiquity as ornament, but antiquity as evidence: the selective borrowing of sacred forms to clothe a structure that appears alien to the Orthodox mind.

Exhibit #20 shows a son’s distress converted into a legal instrument. The pleadings, public persona, linguistic habits, and household rhetoric surrounding this case show something similar at the level of identity: Orthodox antiquity selectively borrowed, polished, and deployed to create authority, while the deeper operating system appears closer to American evangelical fundamentalism than to the ascetic, eucharistic, conciliar mind of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

The complaint does not simply identify Fr. Josiah’s wife as Catherine Trenham. It presents her to a secular federal court as the “Presbytera” of St. Andrew Church, a specifically Greek ecclesiastical honorific, draped over an American-born, non-Greek woman from Mount Shasta.

Unsealed records and personal recollections from his undergraduate years at Westmont College indicate that his wife’s given legal name was Kerry, later restyled as Catherine. According to accounts from that period, it was Kerry from Mount Shasta who helped bring the evangelical “Brad,” as he was known then, into Orthodoxy. Yet in the federal pleadings, that biographical reality disappears beneath a borrowed ecclesiastical costume. The woman from Mount Shasta is not introduced merely as wife, mother, co-plaintiff, or parish leader. She is elevated before the court as “Presbytera.”

Mount Shasta only deepens the contradiction. The region is widely known as one of America’s centers of alternative spirituality and metaphysical reinvention: New Age seekers, esoteric experimenters, UFO devotees, and modern shamans treating the mountain as a spiritual power spot. This is not the soil of an ancestral Orthodox village, a persecuted ethnic parish, or a centuries-old liturgical inheritance. It is a landscape of spiritual reinvention.

Yet from that soil emerges a household presented to the court in the borrowed garments of ancient Orthodoxy.

The theatricality does not stop with legal honorifics. People who knew him during his university years remember a man who spoke like any other young man from Southern California, with no heavy foreign cadence, no cultivated Old World delivery, and no obvious speech impediment. Today, his heavy vocal inflections and stylized delivery function as part of the brand: a constructed pose meant to project severity, antiquity, and foreign spiritual authority.

Behind the public performance of Orthodoxy stands a very different formation. Fr. Josiah Trenham was not formed in an Orthodox seminary. Before his Orthodox ordination, he was reportedly licensed as a minister by the Presbyterian Church in America and later ordained in the Reformed Episcopal Church.

His intellectual and pastoral habits were shaped inside the Protestant educational apparatus: Westmont College, Reformed Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary in California. He grew up within Presbyterian and Reformed traditions.

That formation is important.

In the ascetic tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church, true spiritual authority is rooted in brokenness, watchfulness, sobriety and self-effacing humility. The deliberate adoption of affected speech patterns and foreign cadences to command an audience is not the sound of holy tradition. It is theatrical vanity: the substitution of religious performance for the quiet mourning of the heart.

And once the persona becomes central, the record itself must be managed.

The same moral fracture appears in the battle over narrative control. Patristic Nectar Publications accused Peter J. SanFilippo of maliciously editing footage to fabricate scandal. But if the available digital record shows later edits, removals, or sanitizing of Fr. Josiah’s own unfiltered language, the accusation turns back upon itself. To condemn manipulation in others while quietly cleaning one’s own record is not transparency. It is control.

Nor is the issue vulgarity alone. It is priestly sobriety. The mouth that invokes the Holy Mysteries should tremble before the passions. When the rhetoric of purity descends into the imagery it claims to rebuke, the result is not pastoral clarity. It is spiritual dissonance.

The same pattern appears in the borrowed language of ecclesiastical authority.

Fr. Josiah does not serve in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. He serves in the Antiochian Archdiocese, where the customary title for a priest’s wife is Khouria or Khourieh. Yet when his household needed to appear before a federal judge clothed in ancient religious prestige, the pleading reached not for the Antiochian title, but for the Greek one.

Greek Orthodox inheritance is derided when it belongs to inherited Orthodox communities, ethnic parishes, ancestral memory, liturgical continuity, or bishops he wishes to diminish. Yet the same inheritance becomes useful when it supplies the aura of antiquity and clerical dignity needed to elevate his own household before a secular court.

That contradiction becomes sharper in light of his documented hostility toward traditional ethnic jurisdictions. In his jurisdictionalism address, Fr. Josiah’s rhetoric toward Greek Orthodox inheritance and Constantinople becomes almost apocalyptic: ecclesiastical division is likened to death, “sulphuric stench,” and the “odor of Babylon,” while the Greek Archdiocese is blamed for having “shattered the unity of Orthodoxy” in America.

This is not the voice of Orthodox catholicity. The Church does not preserve unity by scorning the peoples, languages, and liturgical memory through which the faith was carried. Pentecost does not erase the nations; it sanctifies their tongues and gathers them into one Eucharistic body.

That is what makes the pleading’s use of “Presbytera” so revealing. He rails against Greek ecclesiastical inheritance when it threatens his localized, Anglo-American religious project, yet borrows it when it serves his own household and brand.

The convert may enter the Orthodox Church sacramentally; but the evangelical imagination, if left unhealed by obedience to Holy Tradition, and the phronema (φρόνημα), the mind of the Church, can simply reappear under icons, cassocks, Greek titles, and patristic quotations.

One finds a haunting echo of this inversion in his academic pretensions. He claims mastery over the ancient, sacred tongue of the Gospels, yet Greek appears in his hands less as a living inheritance of the Church than as a clinical possession: parsed, classified, and deployed for authority (yet the actual, unlearned pronunciation remains severely discordant to the ear), while the living, messy, enduring, and beautifully imperfect life of an ancient, suffering people who preserved the faith through centuries of prayer, exile, liturgy, and martyrdom to hand it down through the generations, remain foreign to him.

Orthodoxy is not ethnic captivity, but neither is it an abstract Anglo-American product stripped of memory, language, and people. To wield Greek as proof of mastery while scorning the people who carried it is not patristic fidelity. It is extraction.

This contradiction becomes even clearer in his public rhetoric about the Greek language and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. In lectures such as “The Vernacular Imperative”, he condemns non-vernacular liturgical language as a “terrible aberration.” Yet his rhetoric remains selectively and disproportionately preoccupied with Greek, Greek usage, and Constantinopolitan influence.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate, whatever criticisms one may have of contemporary church politics, remains inseparable from the historical, liturgical, and conciliar memory of the Orthodox Church.

Even his chosen ecclesiastical moniker, “Josiah,” exposes the same pattern of imported severity. In the podcast, “Living with Horrible Parents,” he refers to

“my patron saint, the holy and righteous King Josiah.”

The name, drawn from the Old Testament reformer-king, carries a distinct ideological charge: purification, centralized obedience, and the eradication of religious impurity. It fits too neatly with the broader project of building a compliant, tightly governed religious domain.

That is revealing.

Patristic records, synaxaria, and historic rosters show that the name “Josiah” is essentially non-existent in the hagiographical inheritance of the Eastern Orthodox Church, though the Sunday of the Holy Forefathers includes King Josiah among those who lived before and under the Law, and those of the flesh. There is no hymn, no Apolytikion or Kontakion naming him, and no locatable record of Orthodox clergymen ever taking this Old Testament name.

That absence speaks volumes.

The name reads less like an organic Orthodox clerical inheritance and more like a deliberate act of self-fashioning.

By contrast, the name carries recognizable Protestant and evangelical resonance, appearing among figures such as Josiah Strong, Rev. Josiah Henson, Josiah Smith, and Josiah Pratt. Grafting a name with such resonance onto an Orthodox clerical identity further exposes the deeper pattern: not organic patristic lineage, but revisionist self-construction.

Because his formation appears to have remained deeply marked by Reformed Protestant categories, and because he never attended an Orthodox seminary, he does not appear to have fully internalized the gentle, long-suffering posture of an Orthodox pneumatikos, a true spiritual father. Having bypassed the slow, traditional formation of patristic eldership, he defaults again and again to the legalistic, magisterial mechanics of his Protestant, seminary-trained past.

An authentic Orthodox spiritual father bears the burdens of his flock with tears, patience, and unconditional love. An imported administrator manages domestic frailty as a public-relations crisis.

This is the deeper pattern: tradition is not received with humility; it is selectively harvested, weaponized, and discarded. Old Testament severity is kept when it justifies disciplining children. Greek Orthodoxy is kept when it elevates status. Patristic language is kept when it commands obedience. But the actual Orthodox ethos; ecclesial accountability, spiritual fatherhood, humility, episcopal obedience, long-suffering love, and healing, is discarded the moment it threatens the brand.

That is the fundamentalist substructure beneath the performance.

That is why these details matter to the story of Exhibit #20. They are not decorative. They show the architecture of inversion: Orthodox symbols above, evangelical components beneath; patristic language on the surface, legalistic control underneath; holy tradition as image, but not as repentance.

Orthodoxy, properly received, is not an aesthetic of antiquity. It is not a clerical costume, a Greek credential, a borrowed title, or a weaponized vocabulary of obedience. It is the life of repentance in the Body of Christ: ascetic, eucharistic, conciliar, noetic, and in the form of The Cross.

The Orthodox Church is not a platform for charismatic self-construction. It is the hospital of the soul, where the passions are healed, the will is humbled, and authority is transfigured into service. When its symbols are detached from that life, they do not sanctify the scaffolding beneath them. They conceal it.

In that sense, the borrowed title, the borrowed antiquity, the borrowed Greek prestige, and the borrowed prophetic name all point toward the same wound. This is not Orthodoxy received as metanoia (μετάνοια). It is Orthodoxy used as authorization. It is not the mind of the Fathers. It is the old evangelical will-to-rule speaking through Orthodox forms.

The Evangelical Engine Beneath the Orthodox Vestments

But the testimony surrounding the household points in another direction. Beneath the Byzantine titles, icons, cassocks, and patristic quotations, the internal structure appears closer to the American fundamentalist world of patriarchal authority, purity culture, family spectacle, and punitive control.

This is where borrowed antiquity becomes more than aesthetic. It becomes functional. The Orthodox symbols provide authority, but the old evangelical gears supplies the engine.

Those who remember his early formation in Southern California describe a young evangelical preacher shaped not first by the organic life of an Orthodox people, but by the idioms of American Protestant revivalism, campus ministry, and personality-driven religious performance.

Nor is that Protestant inheritance merely incidental. In biographical accounts of his journey to Orthodoxy, Fr. Josiah has emphasized his English ancestry, including ties to the Puritan world of New England, and contrasted those roots with his later conversion to Orthodoxy: a young man formed in the Reformed and Presbyterian world, licensed in the Presbyterian Church in America.

That background matters because Puritanism is not simply a genealogical detail. It carries a spiritual and cultural architecture: covenantal household order, moral rigor, suspicion of sensuality, textual severity, and the impulse to purify the community through discipline. When such a framework is not healed and transfigured by repentance, sacraments, conciliarity, and a spiritual father, it can survive conversion intact. It can simply exchange Geneva’s vocabulary for Byzantium’s vestments.

The question, then, is not whether a man of Puritan and Reformed ancestry can become truly Orthodox. Of course he can. The Orthodox Church is catholic, not tribal. The question is whether, in this case, the old Puritan-Reformed machanism remained operative beneath the Orthodox surface: the reformer’s severity, the patriarch’s household control, the preacher’s public certainty, and the legalistic instinct to manage impurity by discipline, exclusion, and erasure.

True reception into Orthodoxy requires more than changing jurisdiction, vocabulary, ancestry, or dress. It requires metanoia (μετάνοια). It requires the slow death of the old religious ego. It requires obedience to the mind of the Church, not the conquest of the Church by one’s inherited habits of domination.

Peers who watched his trajectory from his early days leading informal evangelical student meetings in Southern California, where he first began actively preaching, note that his later ministry follows the contours and ambitions of the ultraconservative Protestant Quiverful world.

That movement, cultivated in American evangelical subcultures, twists patriarchal authority, large-family religious dominion, strict household obedience, and the dynastic expansion of the faithful through reproduction. It has repeatedly drawn intense scrutiny for enabling spiritual abuse, authoritarian family systems, and the devastating silencing of familial trauma for the sake of preserving a pristine religious brand.

The most visible modern parallel is the Duggar family of 19 Kids and Counting: a massive media brand built around bent patriarchal submission, rigid household discipline, family-as-ministry spectacle, and carefully curated domestic righteousness.

When severe sexual abuse within the family was exposed, the pristine image gave way to the darker mechanics beneath it: enforced loyalty, spiritualized obedience, sexual scandal, cult-like systems of spiritual abuse, and institutional pressure to protect the family brand at all costs.

The parallel to the Quiverfull movement is not merely an external critique; it is a theology explicitly endorsed from his own commentary. In a June 2025 appearance on the Lila Rose Show, the rhetoric of fundamentalist movement was laid bare. He directly invoked the foundational text of the Quiverfull movement:

“Like arrows in the hand of a warrior so are the children of one’s youth how blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them... that is the Christian understanding of kids.”

This relentless drive for biological expansion is not the ascetic moderation of the Church Fathers; it is the demographic panic of American fundamentalism. The Fathers, including Chrysostom, explicitly taught that the Old Covenant mandate to physically “multiply” was fulfilled in Christ, shifting the Christian focus toward spiritual sobriety, mutual salvation, and marital continence. They viewed children as a blessing, not a mandated quota.

He went on to mock families with fewer children, stating:

“Is 1.6 being fruitful and multiply? I’m sorry that’s not even reproducing yourself... Multiplying is at least what, four.”

When this dynastic expansion is mandated as “the Christian understanding,” the household ceases to be a hospital for the soul and becomes a high-demand production engine; one where the collateral damage of a wounded child is easily swept aside to protect the institution.

When Orthodox language is used to sanctify the same architecture of control, public righteousness, private fear, family spectacle, image protection, and pressure to silence the wounded, the resemblance becomes spiritually instructive.

The underlying reality of this substructure slips out in Aidan’s own words. In his video testimony, he describes being subjected to extreme ascetic physical chastisement:

“extremist Judeo-Christian household.”

That phrase is devastating.

“Judeo-Christian” is not the vocabulary of the patristic mind, much less “extremist”. It is not the language of the Philokalia, the synaxaria, the Fathers, or the ascetic tradition of the Eastern Church. It belongs to the socio-political and religious vocabulary of modern American conservatism and Protestant fundamentalism.

Nor is that resonance harmless. In American evangelical life, “Judeo-Christian” functions as a political-theological bridge into Christian Zionism: a framework in which biblical language, Old Testament imagery, national destiny, mishapen patriarchal order, and modern geopolitics are fused into a single religious imagination.

The Orthodox Church has officially condemned it as a modern heresy and a source of spiritual confusion, precisely because it turns the land, the covenant, and biblical prophecy into a modern political program.

Orthodox theology does not read Jerusalem, Israel, and the promises of God through evangelical dispensationalism or geopolitical destiny, but through Christ, the Church, the New Covenant, and the Kingdom of God.

Whatever Fr. Josiah’s later Orthodox vocabulary, the phrase Aidan reached for is not the speech of the Fathers. It is the world of American evangelical formation.

That is the tell.

Beneath the cassocks, Byzantine honorifics, patristic quotations, and denunciations of heterodox terminology, the household’s internal mechanics were not experienced as Orthodox in the healing, ascetic, sacramental sense. Ironically, this push directly echoes the very globalist, homogenizing mindset Fr. Josiah so frequently decries from his platform. It acts as a stepping stone toward syncretism, substituting the organic, deeply tethered soil of tradition with an artificial corporate construct mirroring only his own image and litigious pride.

Here, the luminous parable of the Prodigal Son undergoes a devastating inversion.

When the wounded son finally appears at the threshold, there is no running forward, no father’s embrace, no robe of restoration, no ring, and no feast.

There is a reason the Church contemplates the betrayal of Judas Iscariot with trembling. Betrayal is not always loud. It does not always arrive with a kiss. Sometimes it arrives quietly, through procedure, calculation, and signatures.

The unsealed court files invite the observer to contemplate a devastating exchange: a broken son made silent while a worldly ministry, revenue stream, and public name remain intact.

Yet the wounded son, hidden from the branded world but not from the sight of God, may stand as the deepest rebuke to the entire machinery. The courtroom may preserve the record. The platform may continue to speak of order, obedience, and tradition. The public image may endure for now.

But the wound remains before Christ.

He sees what litigation cannot heal, what branding cannot sanctify, and what silence cannot erase.

The Cross is not the saving of one’s own name by the vanishing of another. It is the holy bearing of shame before God, the descent of love into the wounds of the suffering, and the judgment of Christ upon every false peace that leaves a son unseen and alone.
